Sauna and pregnancy
Going to the sauna while pregnant
Are you used to visiting the sauna regularly and want to continue this healthy habit during your pregnancy? Then it’s good to know that pregnancy and sauna visits can go well together. The deep relaxation is beneficial for both mother and baby and may even support a smoother delivery. Improved circulation and fluid loss through sweating can also help reduce water retention. Still, there are a few things to keep in mind.
Have you never been to the sauna before and are now considering going while pregnant? In that case, it’s important to be cautious. Your body needs to adapt to the sauna’s conditions, which may place additional stress on your system during pregnancy. Always consult your doctor first.
Sauna during the first 14 weeks of pregnancy
In general, sauna use is discouraged during the first 14 weeks of pregnancy. This is purely as a safety precaution, as an increase in body temperature early in pregnancy may slightly raise the risk of birth defects (source: www.gezondvgz.nl).
Sauna after the first trimester
If you’re over three months pregnant and want to visit the sauna, be mindful of the following:
-
Avoid a sharp rise in body temperature—limit your sauna session to 10 minutes and don’t sit in the hottest areas. Be cautious with hot baths and tanning beds as well.
-
Hormonal changes can make your body respond differently than usual to heat. Pay close attention to how you feel, and leave the sauna immediately if you feel unwell. Dilated blood vessels may cause low blood pressure, dizziness, or even fainting—always visit the sauna with someone.
-
Cool down gradually—prefer a lukewarm shower over an icy plunge pool.
Sauna during the last 6 weeks of pregnancy
During the last 4 to 6 weeks, some women begin to dilate slightly, which may increase the risk of infection. As a precaution, sauna use is also discouraged during this final stage of pregnancy.
