Sauna and varicose veins

Going to the Sauna with Varicose Veins

If you have small, early-stage varicose veins that don’t cause any discomfort, you can safely enjoy our saunas. However, if you experience symptoms such as a heavy or tired feeling in your legs, pain, or occasional bleeding when bumping your legs, we advise against sauna visits. The claim that saunas cause varicose veins is a myth (source: www.helderkliniek.nl).

The effect of the sauna on varicose veins

Varicose veins are weakened and stretched blood vessels caused by changes in the vein wall or malfunctioning valves (source: www.hartenvaatgroep.nl). This impairs the return flow of oxygen-poor blood to the heart. As a result, some blood flows backward, creating increased pressure that causes the veins to expand.

The heat in a sauna causes several physical responses. One of them is vasodilation — the widening of blood vessels — as your body attempts to cool down. While this improves circulation, it can also worsen symptoms of varicose veins, making it even more difficult for your body to return blood from the legs to the heart.

In the sauna with varicose veins

If you have mild varicose veins, a sauna visit is generally safe. That said, always consult your doctor first. If you receive medical approval, follow these tips during your sauna visit:

  • Start with a warm foot bath and dry your feet thoroughly afterward.

  • Avoid the hottest areas (typically higher benches) in the sauna.

  • Preferably lie down or sit with your legs stretched out at body height to encourage blood flow.

  • Limit your sauna time to 10–15 minutes.

  • Take your time cooling down and rest for about 30 minutes afterward in a reclining chair with your legs elevated.
