Going to the Sauna with Asthma

One natural way to help ease asthma symptoms is by visiting a sauna regularly. The soothing effect of the sauna can stimulate the immune system and contribute to a healthy lifestyle — both of which can reduce asthma complaints (source: www.longfonds.nl).

Although our saunas are not a substitute for medication, they can offer relief and help alleviate asthma symptoms.

How the sauna affects asthma

In people with asthma, the mucous membranes in the bronchial tubes are irritated and narrowed. The warm air you inhale in the sauna relaxes the muscles surrounding the bronchi, allowing them to expand. This helps you breathe more easily and promotes the drainage of excess mucus.

Safe sauna use with asthma

Always consult your doctor before visiting our saunas. As noted above, asthma is not a contraindication for sauna visits, but the heat may influence how your medications work. For instance, hormone levels may shift, which can affect medication effectiveness.

Enjoying the sauna with asthma

Even with asthma, you can fully enjoy a sauna experience. At Thermen, you can choose from sixteen different types of saunas. Some people with asthma tolerate high humidity well, while others prefer dry heat. Will you choose our infrared sauna or perhaps the saltarium? Come and explore them all.

If you have any questions during your visit, feel free to ask our sauna hosts. They’re always ready to help and offer advice.
