Heart problems and sauna
Going to the Sauna with Heart Problems
People with heart conditions can generally enjoy the sauna safely. Only in the first six months after a heart attack is sauna use discouraged. Medical research has shown that regular sauna use in patients with chronic heart failure can improve exercise capacity and heart function (source: American Journal of Cardiology). That’s great news — but before planning your wellness day at Thermen, always consult your physician first.
Effects of the Sauna on Heart Conditions
Alternating between hot and cold environments causes your blood vessels to expand and contract. These fluctuations may lead to noticeable changes in blood pressure. Your heart rate increases, which helps pump more blood through your body. While dilation improves circulation, it may also temporarily lower your blood pressure. During cooling, the opposite happens — blood vessels constrict, raising blood pressure again.
To help you enjoy a safe and relaxing visit, here are some practical tips:
-
Avoid using the sauna right after intense physical exertion.
-
Start with a warm foot bath and dry your feet thoroughly afterward.
-
Stay hydrated by drinking plenty of mineral water during and after your sauna session.
-
Avoid sitting in the hottest spots in the sauna.
-
Limit your time in the sauna to 10–15 minutes, and spend the last few minutes seated upright to prevent dizziness.
-
Cool down gradually — skip the plunge pool and cold showers.
-
Rest for at least 30 minutes afterward.
-
Leave the sauna immediately if you feel unwell.
